First Steps supports pregnant women and newborn babies in Washington by showing you how to use medical, social, educational, and other local resources that can help during your pregnancy.
Our approach to First Steps
You face a lot of questions and decisions when you’re pregnant. Help is out there, but you have to know where to look. Our First Steps program, run by Community Health Services, is there for you. We guide you through all the community resources that are available to you, and we show you how to use them. You can start getting help from the First Steps Program anytime during your pregnancy and for 60 days after your baby is born. The sooner you get started with First Steps, the better. This service can help pregnant women who receive Medicaid and families with babies up to 12 months old.
Answers for you and your newborn.
- Pregnant women can get:
- Personal home or office visits that focus on what you need before and after the birth
- Education on labor and delivery.
- Brief counseling
- Breastfeeding help
- Nutrition advice
- Information on how to get community resources
Families and newborns can get:
- Educational services
- Other community services

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- Live in Washington or Oregon
- Be pregnant or less than 2 months postpartum, or have a child less than 12 months old
- Have Washington or Oregon Medicaid coverage (Apple Health, OHP)
