Medical Spanish Immersion Program
Our optional four-week Medical Spanish Immersion Program in Guatemala will introduce you to the culture and language of the people we serve while you learn from local clinicians.
Medical Spanish Immersion Program
As part of Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic commitment to culturally responsive care, all new providers are offered the opportunity to attend a rewarding four‑week Medical Spanish Immersion Program at Pop Wuj (pronounced “Pope-woo”) Clinic in Guatemala. This unique experience is designed to serve as an introduction to the culture and language.
This immersive experience is offered in partnership with Pop Wuj, a respected clinic and language school located in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, known locally as Xela (pronounced “shay-la”). As the country’s second‑largest city, Xela offers a rich cultural environment where Spanish is spoken clearly and at a slower pace, making it ideal for learners. Providers work alongside two on‑staff Guatemalan physicians and engage with patients whose lived experiences offer invaluable insight into the social and cultural factors that shape health.
The program’s learning objectives go far beyond vocabulary. Participants gain experience with common medications used in the Pop Wuj Clinic, learn to manage health conditions rarely seen in the U.S., and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in resource‑limited settings. Providers also build skills in preventive care and the management of common medical issues affecting underserved populations. Just as importantly, they learn culturally informed communication strategies that strengthen doctor‑patient trust and improve patient engagement, skills that directly enhance the care we deliver at home.
For providers who want to deepen their cultural understanding, strengthen their Spanish, and broaden their clinical perspective, this program is both transformative and deeply meaningful. It prepares you to return to our clinics with greater confidence, stronger communication skills, and a richer appreciation for the communities we serve.
