Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about joining YVFWC

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No, Spanish proficiency is not required. All of our clinical staff work alongside certified bilingual medical assistants who provide translation support. However, we do offer an optional 4-week Medical Spanish Immersion Program in Guatemala for providers who want to enhance their language skills.

What does the loan repayment program look like?

YVFWC offers multiple loan repayment options:
  • NHSC Loan Repayment: Our HPSA scores (18-21) qualify you for federal loan repayment of up to $50,000 for a 2-year commitment
  • Washington Health Corps: State program providing additional loan repayment support
  • YVFWC 60-Month Program: We pay your monthly student loan payment for 60 months, then pay off your entire remaining balance on month 61
These programs can often be combined for maximum benefit.

What does a typical workweek look like?

For a 1.0 FTE physician position, you'll work approximately 40 hours per week, with 34 hours dedicated to direct patient care and 6 hours for administrative tasks including chart documentation, care coordination, and professional development. This protected admin time ensures you're not overwhelmed with after-hours charting.

Do you sponsor visas?

Yes! We sponsor both J-1 visa waivers and H-1B visas for qualified international medical graduates. We have experience with the J-1 waiver process and can connect you with immigration attorneys who specialize in physician visa matters.

What's the call schedule like?

Call schedules vary by specialty and location. Family medicine physicians typically share call responsibilities with their clinic team. OB/GYN physicians provide call coverage at MultiCare Memorial Hospital in Yakima on a rotating schedule. We'll discuss specific call expectations during your interview.

Can I tour the clinics before accepting an offer?

Absolutely! We strongly encourage site visits and cover all travel expenses. You'll tour our facilities, meet the clinical teams, shadow providers if desired, and explore the Yakima Valley communities. This helps ensure YVFWC is the right fit for you and your family.

What if I'm a new graduate with no experience?

We welcome new graduates! Our team-based care model provides strong support for early-career providers. You'll work alongside experienced physicians, have access to consultation with specialists, and benefit from our collaborative practice environment. Many of our current providers joined us right out of residency.

Is there opportunity for career advancement?

Yes! YVFWC offers numerous growth opportunities including becoming a residency faculty member, taking on clinical leadership roles, participating in quality improvement initiatives, or moving into medical director positions. We're committed to developing our providers professionally.
