“I’m amazed at how this event has grown over the past 10 years,” Rosa Ortiz, Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic Outreach Coordinator said. “We started this event to remember Dr. King, and each year the community’s excitement and participation has grown.”
Ten years ago, the first gathering was held, and about 80 participants showed. Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic CEO Carlos Olivares was the keynote speaker and the Toppenish High School high school drumming class performed.
Now, more than 800 people attend the event. Olivares will return to the 10th annual gathering as the keynote speaker.
“Martin Luther King Jr.’s role in history paved the way to give me the opportunities that I have,” Olivares said.
The event is a collaborative effort by Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic, Toppenish School District, City of Toppenish, Community Safety Network of Toppenish, Heritage University, Toppenish Rotary, Fiesta Foods, and Starbucks.
Coffee, hot chocolate, and cupcakes will be provided to all attendees.
