Mirasol Family Health Center to Host First Annual Breast Cancer Awareness 5k

Event to Celebrate Breast Cancer Survivors, Encourage Women to Get Screened

HERMISTON Mirasol Family Health Center is planning its first annual Breast Cancer Awareness 5k, Saturday, October 14, 2017. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Mirasol Family Health Center is located at 589 NW 11th Ave., in Hermiston, Oregon.

For breast cancer diagnosis, early detection can save lives. That’s why regular screenings are so important to Mirasol Family Health Center registered nurse, Claire Miller.

Miller’s mom is a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed through a routine exam in 2011.  She endured chemotherapy treatments and ended up having a double mastectomy to reduce the chance of recurrence. “Breast cancer screening saved my mom’s life,” she said.

Miller wants to do what she can to help her community understand the importance of screenings, such as breast cancer exams. “Breast cancer touches so many families that I think it’s important for the Hermiston community to have a visible reminder to schedule an exam during breast cancer awareness month,” she added.

Studies suggest that women who live in rural communities like Umatilla County are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer than women who live in urban areas. “Education and awareness are two of the most important tools we have,” Miller said.

The Mirasol Family Health Center Breast Cancer Awareness 5k is a free community event, and we encourage families, businesses, and community groups to register a team and walk with the community.

In addition to the 5k, there will be a raffle with prizes, games for kids, rock painting for the Hermiston Rock Hunt, face painting, and more.

To register a team, visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mirasol-breast-cancer-awareness-walk-tickets-36325678081?aff=es2 Participants who bring proof of online registration will receive an additional raffle ticket.

Several providers at Mirasol Family Health Center have set aside time to provide free breast exams for anyone who would like to have one after the 5k.

Starbucks and Fiesta Foods are donating coffee and refreshments for all attendees of this free event. “It means a lot that businesses in Hermiston are willing to support this important community event,” said Clinic Manager Justine Taylor.

Free t-shirts will be available while supplies last
