January 9, 2017

More than 800 attendees expected

TOPPENISH – More than 800 community members marched in the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March. This year, the event committee expects to see more attendees at the Jan. 16 event.

The Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic (YVFWC), Toppenish School District, and Toppenish Community Safety Network (CSN) will host the 7th annual MLK Peace March in Toppenish, celebrating MLK’s message of unity and community involvement. The Toppenish Peace March gathering is set for Monday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m.

The march will begin at the Toppenish Medical Dental Clinic parking lot, at 10:30 a.m. in front of the mural, located at 510 West First Avenue.

“This year we have a special treat for event attendees, Roberto Dansie will be our keynote speaker,” said Rosa Ortiz, event committee chairperson.

Roberto Dansie, PhD is an award-winning author, motivational and diversity speaker.

The celebration will continue with motivational speaker presentations and performances.

“During this event, we really want to focus on children, youth, and education. MLK believed that an investment in education makes a difference not only in a child’s life, but in the health and well-being of the community as a whole,” Ortiz added.
